5 Jahre spaeter - 5 years on

Ja, es gibt mich noch. Und wenn eine Sache es wirklich wert ist, dass ich diesen Blog aus der Versenkung hole, dann mein 5-jaehriges "Jubilaeum". Am Donnerstag, 14.06.2018, war es naemlich 5 Jahre her, dass ich nach UK ausgewandert bin. Und auch wenn Brexit nach wie vor ein Thema ist, das mich ziemlich beschaeftigt und auch beunruhigt, habe ich beschlossen, den naechsten Schritt hinsichtlich meiner Auswanderung zu unternehmen.

Vor ein paar Minuten habe ich die Online-Bewerbung fuer sogenannte "Permanent Residency" abgeschickt. Dies kann man beim Home Office beantragen, sobald man 5 Jahre in UK gelebt hat. Mal schaun, wie lang die Bewerbung dauert. Da stand, es kann bis zu 6 Monate sein. Hoffe, es geht schneller. Naja, um das ganze wirklich abzuschliessen hab ich jetzt 2 Wochen Zeit um neue Passbilder machen zu lassen und rueber nach Wokingham zu fahren rum Registry Office, damit die meinen Pass und andere Unterlagen kopieren, beglaubigen und fuer mich einschicken (ich geb doch nicht meinen Pass fuer 6 Monate aus der Hand!!)

Was bringt mir die "Permanent Residency"? Auf den ersten Blick nicht viel, kostet mich eigentlich grad nur Zeit und Geld. Aber, keiner weiss, was Maerz 2019 geschieht, wenn diese ganze Brexit-Katastrophe wirklich geschieht und UK aus der EU austritt. Ich will mich eigentlich nicht auf dieses neue System von "Settled Status" einlassen, das mir effektiv null Rechte gibt. Was sich nach wie vor scheinbar aber nicht aendert ist, "Permanent Residency" fuer mindestens 1 Jahr vorweisen zu koennen, wenn man sich fuer britische Staatsbuergerschaft bewerben will. Auch hier ist natuerlich die Situation mit Brexit grad alles andere als hilfreich, aber abwarten und Tee trinken bringt mir hier derzeit null. Aktuell scheint duale Staatsbuergerschaft seitens UK okay zu sein. Mal schaun was Deutschland nach Brexit sagt. Ich gehe von aus, dass ich um Genehmigung bei der deutschen Regierung bitten muss (was wahrscheinlich auch wieder Geld kostet), aber hege die Hoffnung, dass ich diese Genehmigung auf duale Staatsbuergerschaft bekomme. Falls nein... tja, darueber mache ich mir Gedanken, wenn es wirklich dazu kommen sollte.

Yes, I'm still alive. And if there is one thing that's worth pulling this blog out of the Black Hole it's sunk into, then it's my 5 year "anniversary". On Thursday, 14th June 2018, it's been 5 years since I moved to the UK. And even though Brexit is still a topic that concerns and worries me a lot, I've decided nonetheless to take the next step in regards to my immigration.

A couple of minutes ago I've sent off my online application for "Permanent Residency". This is something you can apply for with the Home Office after having lived in the UK for 5 years. Let's see how long this application will take. It said it can take up to 6 months. Hope it'll go faster. Anyway, in order to really finalise my application I now have 2 weeks to get new passport photos taken, and then head over to the Registry Office in Wokingham so that they can copy, verify and send in my passport and other supporting documents (I definitely won't give my passport away for 6 months!!)

What do I get out of "Permanent Residency"? At first glance not much, in fact it's only costing me time and money. But nobody knows what'll happen March 2019 when this hole Brexit catastrophe really happens and the UK leaves the EU. I am not keen on this new system of "Settled Status" which effectively gives me zero rights. But, what seems to remain the same so far is the requirement to have "Permanent Residency" for at least 1 year, if you want to apply for British citizenship. Of course here everything is also up in the air thanks to Brexit, but just waiting and sitting around won't help me either. For now it seems that dual citizenship will still be okay in the eyes of the British government. Remains to be seen what Germany says after Brexit. For now I'm expecting that I will have to apply for permission with the German government (which will most likely also cost money), but I'm hopeful that I'd get this permission for dual citizenship. If not... well, I'll worry about that should it really happen.
