Gedanken eines Auswanderers / Musings of an immigrant

Doch was ist so besonders? Dienstagabend?

Evenings like tonight are much more important than one might think. But why? Tuesday evening? If only it was easy to explain...

In a way, it seems totally obvious. I was never very patriotic. But ever since I left Germany, I feel a lot more patriotic than ever. After all it's no longer a given to hear German conversations. To listen to German songs on the radio. To see German cities in the evening news. For many a typical thing to happen. Something I never deemed important.

But evenings like tonight, during which I exclusively listen to (and sing along to) German songs are special. At least for me. And I have the impression only immigrants like myself stand a chance to understand what I'm trying to convey. Because while I was still living in Germany, I also loved German songs, but now they have become so much more for me. A clear link to where I'm from. I listen to German songs because I choose to. After all, they are not part of the radio landscape here.

It is strange to think about things which used to be a given and now are a rarity. And because of this they have grown in importance. In this case it's the memory of where I'm from, my roots... and I feel proud to be German. Because ever since my immigration I carry a certain sense of patriotism in me. Something which I didn't notice while I was still living in Germany. A strange feeling. But it feels right.

Yes it is, really. On a vacation (even it last longer) you do not mention it this way. Over the years there is something growing inside yourself. And if you live a longer time away from your usual life you realize some day that there is something missing. I think the first time you have such a feeling is when you has left your family home for your own life.
